I object to the label white & middle class both because they don’t include my working class life and my puertoricanness, but also because “white & middle class” stands for a kind of politics. Color and class don’t define people or politics. I don’t believe in “sadness,” “joy,” or “regret.” Maybe the best proof that the language is patriarchal is that it oversimplifies feeling. I’d like to have at my disposal complicated hybrid emotions, Germanic train-car constructions like, say, “the happiness that attends disaster.” Or: “the disappointment of sleeping with one’s fantasy.” I’d like to show how “intimations of mortality brought on by aging family members” connects with “the hatred of mirrors that begins in middle age.” I’d like to have a word for “the sadness inspired by failing restaurants” as well as for “the excitement of getting a room with a minibar.” I’ve never had the right words to describe my life, and now that I’ve entered my story, I need them more than ever.””

- Jeffrey Eugenides, Middlesex.

"All of the qualities that you need to be a good opinion columnist tend to be qualities that aren’t..."

“All of the qualities that you need to be a good opinion columnist tend to be qualities that aren’t valued in women.”

- Anna Quindlen, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1992, on today’s Fresh Air. (via nprfreshair)

Record Daaaaaay

Record Daaaaaay

Things I love come up over and over.

Things I love come up over and over.

"The more I think of it, I find this conclusion more impressed upon me, that the greatest thing a..."

“The more I think of it, I find this conclusion more impressed upon me, that the greatest thing a human soul ever does in this world is to see something.
My friend Simon and I are currently exchanging snapshops of photographers we like. I’ll post here what he sends me and what I will or have sent him.

Looking through the margins of my notebooks for class what catches my eye is that I write down things that have happened to me. Things that I remembered all of a sudden that I don’t want to forget. It feels like things slip away. The internet is as permanent as anything else, I guess. More permanent?

I just want to remember.

Googling dollhouses…This site is really creepy and cool....

Googling dollhouses…This site is really creepy and cool.
